Whether you're gearing up for a full-blown fright fest or just want to impress trick-or-treaters with something a little more special, Halloween is the perfect excuse to indulge in some devilishly good sweets. And it doesn't have to be a last-minute bag of pick and mix bought on the way home. This year supermarkets and brands have gone all-out with spooky packaging, limited-edition flavours and Halloween-themed treats we're actually excited to eat. So we’ve done the tasting (and the treating) for you.

From classic crowd-pleasers to clever seasonal twists, here are the Halloween treats worth sinking your fangs into this year.

Best Halloween treats to buy this year

M&S Hallow Scream Munch

M&S Hallow Scream Munch

M&S is quickly becoming known for its addictive munch mixes – the giant Christmas tins are the most familiar but this year there's a Halloween edition too. Inside the bag you'll find a mix of Maltesers, brownie pieces, jelly beans and pretzels. It would be the perfect snack for sharing in front a spooky film night.

The Hummingbird Bakery Halloween cupcake box

Hummingbird Bakery

A platter of these intricately decorated cupcakes is a must for a Halloween party. Containing a selection of chocolate, vanilla and red velvet cupcakes, each with a different spooky design, they are a guaranteed crowdpleaser. We loved unboxing them – they look almost too good to eat! The red velvet remains our favourite with its classic rich cream cheese icing. The decorations are also pleasingly cute and spooky rather than excessively gory, which makes them much more appetising.

Co-op creepy cobwebs and bats

Co-op cobwebs and bats

It's not all sweets this Halloween! These moreish crisps are a fun addition to a Halloween party and are sure to disappear quickly! Make sure you stock up on a few bags. We love the fun cobweb shape – the bat is slightly less distinct but still all part of the spooky theme. The cheesy flavour is just the right level and not too strong, so you'll keep going back for more.

Co-op (£1)

Cake or Death graveyard brownie slab

DM - COD Xmas-Halloween 11low

A great option for vegans this Halloween, Cake or Death is surely the most appropriately named brand for spooky season. Thankfully, the graveyard brownie slab is a lot less scary than it sounds. Decorated with wiggly worm sweets and chocolate skulls, the slab of brownie underneath is rich and fudgy, and has a surprise filling of cookies and cream biscuits so there is plenty to please a sweet tooth here. A great gift to take to a Halloween get-together.

Another fun savoury option to pick up for your Halloween party this year. Who says pigs in blankets are just for Christmas? This pigs in blankets selection has sausages of different levels of spice but look identical, so you don't know what you're going to get until you try. Luckily, even the spiciest sausage is still enjoyable so there's nothing too terrifying here, but it's a fun game to play. The tomato and chilli ketchup it comes with is good too.

M&S Spooky Kookie dough bites

M&S spookie kookie dough bites

A dentist's Halloween nightmare but a sweet tooth's treat... These bites from M&S load up plenty of treats: fudgy cookie dough is studded with candied chocolate pieces and then coated in a thick layer of white and milk chocolate. It is super sweet but do you expect anything less? There is a tiny salty edge from the fudge and we couldn't resist having a second.
